Getting started
What is Pet CareVault?
Pet CareVault is a digital pet care plan and handoff system.
It gives you one place to capture what you know about your pet, invite the people you would want to step in, and create a clearer handoff when care needs to move to someone else.
Is Pet CareVault only for emergencies?
No.
Emergencies are one situation where having the people and care plan in place can be especially important, but Pet CareVault is useful more broadly whenever care may need to change hands.
That can include travel, unexpected delays, illness, hospitalization, backup care, longer absences, or another change in who is caring for your pet.
Is this just for dogs and cats?
No. Pet CareVault has dedicated profiles for dogs, cats, horses, birds, small mammals, reptiles, and fish.
Each profile includes questions and care details tailored to that type of animal. But every pet is an individual, too. Pet CareVault gives you a place to capture what you know about yours, from their health and daily routines to the little preferences and quirks that someone caring for them might not otherwise know.
That way, when someone else steps in, they have more than a list of instructions. They have a clearer picture of your pet and what helps them feel safe, comfortable, and cared for.
The information
Your pet’s care plan
What can I include?
Your care plan can bring together both the essentials and the details someone might only know from caring for your pet, including:
- Feeding and routines
- Medications and allergies
- Medical information
- Veterinary contacts
- Behavior and handling
- Preferences and comfort needs
- Important contacts
- Identification information
- Personal observations and other details unique to your animal
Can I update it?
Yes.
Your pet’s care changes over time, and the plan can change with them.
Review it whenever medications, routines, veterinary information, caregivers, or other important details change.
Do I need to complete everything at once?
No. Pet CareVault automatically saves your progress as you go, so you can start your pet’s care plan, step away, and come back to it whenever you're ready.
You don't have to remember every detail in one sitting. Take your time adding the information, routines, and little things that make your pet's care their own.
Care can look very different from one animal to another. The handoff still matters.
The people
People and caregivers
Do the people I choose need to agree to their roles?
Your long-term caregiver and emergency contact are both asked to accept their roles when you invite them.
This helps make sure the people you're counting on know what you're asking of them and have agreed to be there for your pet when needed.
You can also give authorized caregivers access to your pet's care profile for other care needs, without requiring them to formally accept a role.
Accepting a role isn't a legal contract, but it helps replace an assumption with a clear understanding of who has agreed to help.
What’s the difference between a long-term caregiver, emergency contact, and authorized caregiver?
Each plays a different role in helping your pet’s care continue when you can’t be there.
Designated Long-Term Caregiver: The person who has agreed to take on full and indefinite responsibility for your pet’s care if you’re no longer able to. They may provide that care themselves or arrange for someone else to do so.
Emergency Contact: The first person others can reach if you’re unable to arrange care for your pet. They agree to respond promptly and help make sure your pet is cared for until you can resume their care or other arrangements are made.
Authorized Caregivers: People you may ask to care for your pet and want to have access to their care plan. These might include family members, friends, pet sitters, or others who help with their care.
You can add multiple authorized caregivers and update them anytime. Unlike the two designated roles, adding authorized caregivers is optional and does not require them to agree to a specific caregiving responsibility.
Can I choose more than one person?
Yes! You can add multiple authorized caregivers, such as family members, friends, or pet sitters, and give them access to your pet’s care plan.
You’ll also choose an Emergency Contact and a Designated Long-Term Caregiver, each with a specific role they agree to take on.
You can add, remove, or change caregivers as your needs change, so the right people have access to your pet’s care information when they need it.

QR codes and alerts
What happens when someone scans my pet’s QR code?
Someone who scans the QR code can see your pet’s name and photo, owner first name, veterinary clinic information, an option to sign in, and a way to alert the emergency contact you selected.
An authorized caregiver who signs in can access the care plan you’ve shared with them.
Does scanning make my care plan public?
No.
Scanning the QR code does not automatically reveal your pet’s full care plan.
Who gets alerted?
The scanner can use the QR experience to alert the emergency contact associated with your pet.
What if someone doesn’t respond?
Pet CareVault provides a way to alert the emergency contact tied to your pet, but it cannot guarantee that any particular person will be available or respond.
Keeping your contacts current and reviewing the people you’ve chosen as circumstances change makes the plan more resilient.
Does Pet CareVault automatically know I’m unavailable?
No.
Pet CareVault does not independently monitor you or decide that a handoff has begun.
A person can use the QR experience to alert the emergency contact, and an authorized caregiver can sign in directly to access the care plan.
Access and protection
Privacy and security
Who can see my pet’s care information?
You control which authorized people can access your pet’s private care information.
The QR experience itself does not make the full care plan publicly available.
How long does an authorized caregiver have access?
Access continues until you change or remove that person.
You can update or remove an authorized caregiver anytime from your account. Pet CareVault does not currently start or end access automatically around scheduled care dates.
How is my information protected?
Pet CareVault uses account access controls and security measures designed to protect your information, including encryption for data in transit, secure cloud infrastructure, access monitoring, and regular security assessments.
These measures help protect your information while keeping your pet’s care plan accessible to you and the people you choose to share it with.
